Wedding Video Music Licensing

Music licensing is the part of this job most videographers end up learning the hard way, generally at the moment a couple posts their film and the audio drops out. The rules themselves aren’t complicated. The consequences of ignoring them land on your client and come back to you. Here’s what matters in practice.

Why wedding video music licensing matters

Using a commercial song without a licence is copyright infringement, and it makes no difference whether you charged for the film. Enforcement is automatic: Content ID and similar systems scan uploads and can mute your audio, block the video in particular regions, or pull it down altogether. Now the couple has a wedding film they can’t share, and you’re the person they’re calling about it.

The “it’s for personal use” myth

Plenty of people assume a private wedding film is exempt. It isn’t. Personal use covers listening to music you’ve bought; it doesn’t cover synchronising it to video and distributing that. And once the couple uploads the film to share with family, which was the entire point of making it, any practical sense of “private” has gone. Buying the track on Spotify or iTunes grants you no sync rights whatsoever.

What a sync licence actually is

Putting music against picture needs a synchronisation licence, and with a commercial recording you’ll usually need two of them: one from the publisher covering the composition, one from the label covering the recording. For a chart song that gets expensive and slow, which is why virtually nobody licenses commercial tracks for wedding films. The practical route is licensing music that was built for this instead.

Where licensed music comes from

Subscription libraries aimed at filmmakers, several of which cover wedding work specifically, hand you cleared tracks for one annual fee under a licence that covers client delivery and posting online. Read what your particular subscription permits, though. Some only cover your own channels. Some cover client work. Some charge per project. That distinction starts to matter the moment a film turns up on a venue’s or a planner’s account.

The creative argument, not just the legal one

A chart song walks in carrying every other memory anyone has attached to it. A well-chosen library track walks in empty and becomes theirs. Library music also comes mixed for picture, with stems and clean builds and usable edit points, which makes cutting to it far less of a fight than wrestling a pop song’s structure. Legal safety is the floor here, not the reason.

When the couple insists on a specific song

This comes up on most bookings. What works: explain the risk plainly, offer to use their track in a private version that never gets uploaded if you’re comfortable doing that, and deliver a licensed version for anything going online. Get the decision in writing so responsibility is shared and documented rather than assumed.

Build it into your process

Ask about music at booking rather than at delivery. Keep a short list of cleared tracks that suit your house style so you aren’t searching for one halfway through an edit. And file the licence details alongside the project, so a claim takes minutes to clear rather than days.

Every film delivered cleared

Every film we cut at Love Story Editing uses properly licensed music, so what you hand your couple is safe to post. Send a project through our wedding video editing service, or choose a teaser edit, ceremony edit, or full wedding film. The standard is on our video portfolio, or you can request a quote.

The takeaway

It reduces to one rule: if the couple is going to share it, the track has to be cleared. Use a filmmaker library. Read what your subscription actually covers. Ask about music at booking instead of at delivery. Document any exception in writing. The cost is a subscription, and what it prevents is the one delivery problem that keeps following you around.
